Measurements

Width (300mm - 3300mm)
Width

Measuring doors & windows is simple but please follow our easy instructions:

  • For bifold & sliding doors to work as smoothly as designed, it is imperative that the outer frame is fitted level and square. To ensure this, you must measure the brickwork aperture as shown below.

  • Three measurements of width and height should be taken and the squareness of the aperture determined by, for example, taking diagonal measurements (see image below). The smallest measurement of width and of height minus a fitting tolerance (usually 10mm) is used to determine manufacturing sizes.

Please also take into account the height of the door’s threshold, that you step over. This is critical for the following reasons:

  • On open-out folding doors with a standard threshold, it allows the possibility of aligning your internal floor with the top of the threshold, to reduce the step over height.

  • On open-out folding doors with an aluminium low threshold, it ensures a level transition from outside to inside, or between internal rooms.

  • On open-in doors it ensures that the opening door sashes do not foul your internal floor.

The Mullion width (W1 & W2) in the image shown is measured from the side of the frame to the centre of the mullion bar. The industry standard is 600mm. The transom height (H1) is measured from the top of the frame to the centre of the transom bar. The industry standard is 400mm.

Fire Escape Regulations

New Build Property

To conform to building regulations all first floor windows must have a means of fire escape. Bathrooms, toilet and landing windows however are exempt.

This window can be installed on the ground floor without consideration unless it is in a room that does not lead directly into a hallway or does not have a main exit door.

A fire escape window should open without obstruction to at least 0.33 mu² and at least 450 mm high or 450 mm wide. If one of the dimensions is at the 450 mm minimum, then the other dimension will need to be at least 734 mm to achieve 0.33 mu². The bottom of the openable area should be no more than 1100mm above the floor.

Replacement Windows

Current regulations state that you can not downgrade your existing means of escape in the event of a fire. A window with a mullion conforms, subject to the above, and would not downgrade your means of escape.

Cills
Cills

The industry standard is 150mm. A stub cill may be required if you have a small reveal or are sitting your door forward in the reveal and want to minimize the projection of the cill. You may choose an 190mm cill if the door is sitting back in the reveal and you need to bridge the brickwork at the base of the door.

The 190mm and 225mm cills have to be selected on triple track sliding patio door systems, due to the width of the bottom frame.

Toughened Glass
Toughened Glass

Glass only requires to be toughened in critical locations as defined by part ‘N’ of the building regulations.

Part N (Glazing) deals primarily with safe breakage of glazing in critical locations, manifestation of glazing to prevent collision, safe cleaning of windows in commercial buildings, prevention of falling from windows and glazed openings.

The below diagram shows locations that require to be toughened (i.e. shaded areas). Click here if you require the detailed regulation part ‘N’
